Porsche collector’s DTLA loft hits the market for $20M

by Kari Hamanaka

Magnus Walker’s live-work loft in downtown Los Angeles’ Arts District has had several lives.

Now, the 1902-built space is on the market for about $20 million.

Walker, a fashion designer and car enthusiast, paid $920,009 for the loft 24 years ago, according to property records. He set up the 11,200-square-foot second floor as a living area, while his Serious Clothing label — which counted Gwen Stefani and Madonna as fans — was downstairs.

The long-bearded entrepreneur stumbled into the film location business not long after moving into the building and carved out what he called a “pretty lucrative” endeavor for more than a decade. Walker’s loft has served as a set for movies, commercials and music videos featuring Kevin Costner, Mary J. Blige, Heidi Klum, The Eagles and other stars.

The upper loft area of the 26,000-square-foot brick building at 1317-1323 Willow Street is described by Walker as a mix of influences, including Hearst Castle, English home and Mid-Century modern. A former railroad spur still servicing rail deliveries to the building up until the 70s is now a garden.

SInce Walker moved in, the Arts District has undergone significant change, evolving from a largely industrial neighborhood to a popular spot that has attracted Hauser & Wirth, Soho Warehouse, Warner Music, the coming East End Studios and a raft of food and fashion brands.

In more recent years, Walker began racing at the Willow Springs International Raceway in Kern County and ultimately began collecting Porsches, attributing his hefty collection to the money he made off the film business. His car collection led to the documentary “Urban Outlaw,” a Hot Wheels toy line bearing his name and a YouTube series a few years ago called “The Next Big Thing with Magnus Walker.”

His Arts District property, if sold, will prove a great investment for Walker, given his initial outlay of less than $1 million. Tori Horowitz and Rinat Greenberg of Compass’ Canyonhaus team and Normal Properties’ Geoff Anenberg have the listing.
